Stock, donor-advised funds and IRA gifts

The most tax-efficient gifts rarely come from a chequebook. Here is how to give from an investment account, a fund or a retirement plan.

Options

Six routes beyond a card payment

Every one of them ends in the same place: meals, rides, in-home care and advocacy across eight localities.

  • Appreciated stock and securities

    Transferring shares you have held for more than a year usually avoids capital gains tax and lets you deduct the full market value. Your broker needs our transfer instructions, which we will send the same day you ask.

    Best for donors holding long-term appreciated shares.

  • Donor-advised fund grants

    Recommend a grant to Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia through Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, the Hampton Roads Community Foundation or any sponsoring organisation. We will supply our legal name and tax identification number.

    Best for donors who already have a DAF.

  • IRA qualified charitable distribution

    If you are 70½ or older you may direct funds straight from an IRA to charity. The distribution is excluded from taxable income and can count toward a required minimum distribution.

    Best for donors taking RMDs who do not itemise.

  • Matching gifts from your employer

    Many Hampton Roads employers double or triple staff donations. Send us the form or the portal confirmation and we will complete our part promptly.

    Best for employed and recently retired donors.

  • Vehicle and in-kind donations

    Reliable vehicles, commercial kitchen equipment and bulk shelf-stable food are genuinely useful. Call first — we will tell you honestly whether we can use it.

    Best for donors with usable assets rather than cash.

  • Workplace and community campaigns

    United Way designations, faith community collections and civic club campaigns. We can supply speakers, materials and a tour of the kitchen.

    Best for groups giving together.
