About us
The agency South Hampton Roads calls when getting older gets complicated
Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia is the designated Area Agency on Aging for eight cities and counties. Since 1973 we have been the one number to ring when an ordinary day stops working.
Who we are
One phone call, no wrong door
We are a private, non-profit organisation — not a government department — funded by the Older Americans Act, the Commonwealth of Virginia, our eight local governments, United Way and thousands of individual donors.
Being an Area Agency on Aging means two things. First, we run programmes directly: meals, rides, in-home care, Medicare counselling, wellness classes, technology coaching and the regional long-term care ombudsman. Second, we are required to know every other service in the region and to hand you to it when it fits better than ours.
That is what “no wrong door” means in practice. If you ring us about a leaking roof, we will not tell you we only do meals. A resource specialist will work out who repairs roofs for older homeowners in your city, and stay with the call until you have a name and a number.
Our office is at 2551 Eltham Avenue, Suite Q, Norfolk, Virginia 23513. Staff are in the eight localities every weekday — at senior centers, in kitchens, in nursing homes and at kitchen tables.

We do not ask people to fit our programmes. We build the week around the person, and then we go and find whatever we do not have.
Not sure what you need?
Call and describe an ordinary day. A resource specialist will work out the rest — including services that belong to other agencies.
