Our senior companions gave 41,200 hours last year. At the annual appreciation lunch in May, one volunteer marked her nineteenth consecutive year of weekly visits to the same neighbour.
The Senior Companion Program pairs volunteers aged 55 and over with older adults who need regular company and light assistance. Income-eligible volunteers receive a modest stipend that does not affect other benefits.
What the hours figure does not capture is what those visits actually do. Companions notice things: a stack of unopened mail, a fridge that has not been opened, a change in how someone is walking. Several hospital admissions were avoided last year because a companion made a phone call.
