Seniors deserve an equitable share of respect, support and resources

Health equity in aging is not a slogan. It is a measurable gap between what older adults in our region need and what they receive.

Health equity in aging is not an abstraction. It is the measurable gap between what older adults in a region need and what they actually receive, and in Hampton Roads that gap has a shape we can describe.

Older adults deserve an equitable share of respect, of support, of consideration and of public resources. When they do not receive it, the reasons are rarely stated openly. They are embedded in how budgets get built, how appointments get scheduled, and how quickly a concern raised by an eighty-year-old gets attributed to confusion.

That is what ageism is: believing older adults are less valuable, or of less interest to society. It shows up in hiring decisions, in clinical settings, inside families, and in line items.

We see the consequences daily. A waiting list for home-delivered meals is a policy outcome, not a natural phenomenon. So is a rural county with no accessible transportation after 4pm.

Naming it is the first part of the work. The second part is showing up in Richmond with people who have lived it. If you want to be one of them, our advocacy network is open.
